We All Need A Hero Or Be One

I have a crush, BIG TIME.  I actually have a few but one in particular lately is my subject of interest.  I know it sends my husband a little, but I can understand if he has a girl crush, the person just needs to be unreachable – like a Catherine Zeta-Jones (hell, I have a girl crush on her) or Angelina Jolie, not my taste, but I can get why a guy could dig her.  So I’ve asked for his patience with me as I pine away for people I see in movies or TV. The latest man crush I have is on Mike Holmes.  He is that contractor dude from Canada who has a HGTV show Holmes on Homes.

I got addicted to this show.  Mike makes right – that’s the tag line.  If you have never seen the show the basic premise is simple: someone had hired a contractor to do work on their house, the hired contractor did a shoddy job and jacked the whole thing up, home owners are out of money and in a state of sometimes hazardous living conditions, Mike Holmes steps in, identifies the problem and then proceeds to fix the problem – or problems; sometimes, he finds problems that no one knew existed.  Basically, you could call him for tile work that is falling apart in your bathroom and find out your whole foundation is out of whack and true to form, from soup to nuts Mike and his crew will fix it.

Mike is a somewhat attractive guy in a Mr. Clean meets Mario from Super Mario Brothers sort of way.  He has blonde, close shaven hair, can always be seen in a pair of overalls and sometimes displays his very athletic arms (I think this guy could bench press me with one arm).   He has an approachable, yet intimidating presence – the kind of guy a girl would find teddy-bearish and at the same time the kind of guy a guy would not want to pick a fight with in a bar.   But his looks and physique are not the source of my attraction or addiction.

My attraction lays elsewhere and after months of trying to convince my husband to watch the show, he finally gets it.   Mike steps in to do the right thing; to help people, who have been wronged, explain why it was wrong, how to do it properly – above minimum building code requirements and then fixes it.  I think about my life, my friends, family and coworkers and sometimes my own actions, how often do people not only step in to do the right thing, but really go above and beyond to make it right?   Unfortunately not as often as I would like to see from myself or other people…amazing what can be learned from a surly contractor from Canada.
